How Faith and DBT Skills Can Help You Navigate Self-Harm with Compassion

Struggling with intense emotions or self-harm urges? Learn how DBT skills combined with Christian faith can help you regulate emotions, find peace, and reconnect with God.

When emotions feel like they’re taking over—when you're stuck in shame, anger, or sadness so deep it aches—it’s easy to feel like self-harm is the only way to cope.

But friend, there is a better way. There are real, research-backed skills that work with your faith to help you pause, breathe, and reconnect with God’s peace.

As a trauma-informed Christian counselor, I teach clients how to use Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills—practical tools for managing overwhelming emotions—alongside their faith in Christ. When paired together, these strategies become not just coping tools but spiritual anchors.

Here are a few that can change everything:

1. TIP Skill (Regulating Intense Emotion Fast)

When your body feels flooded with emotion—like panic, rage, or despair—this DBT skill helps you regulate your nervous system:

  • T = Temperature: Splash cold water on your face or hold an ice pack.

  • I = Intense Exercise: Do 20 jumping jacks or run in place.

  • P = Paced Breathing: Breathe slowly in through your nose and out through your mouth.

Pair this with Psalm 18:16:

“He reached down from on high and took hold of me; He drew me out of deep waters.”

This skill is your “holy pause”—a way to stop the spiral and invite God into the storm.

2. Radical Acceptance: Trusting God in What Is

Self-harm often comes from trying to escape pain we don’t want to face. But Radical Acceptance invites us to stop fighting reality and instead surrender it to God.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” — Proverbs 3:5

Acceptance isn’t approval—it’s choosing peace in what we can’t change.

3. Self-Soothing with the Five Senses

Create a comfort space that engages your five senses:

  • A soft blanket (touch)

  • Worship music (sound)

  • A warm drink (taste)

  • A candle (smell)

  • Beautiful artwork or Scripture (sight)

As Hebrews 4:16 reminds us:

“Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence…”

Even if your body is anxious, you can invite peace into your space.

Your Spiritual Anchor in Distress

God is not ashamed of your struggle. He’s near in your distress—and He’s given you both spiritual and practical tools to walk through it.

If you or someone you love is navigating emotional pain or self-harm urges, you are not alone—and you don’t have to white-knuckle your way through.
